Synopsis
“Samia” (2024) is a compelling biopic directed by Yasemin Samdereli, portraying the inspiring journey of Somali athlete Samia Yusuf Omar (played by Ilham Mohamed Osman).
Growing up in Mogadishu, Samia dreams of competing in the Olympic Games, despite societal restrictions and the dangers women face in sports. Encouraged by her father (Fatah Ghedi) but met with her mother’s concerns, she defies a ban on female athletes, training in secret with unwavering determination. Based on true events, “Samia” is a powerful tribute to a young woman’s relentless pursuit of freedom and excellence against all odds.
